Biographical Notes:

“The British launch Operation Crusader in November 1941 to destroy the Afrika Korps (German Africa Corps) and lift the siege of Tobruk. The New Zealand Division attacks German-Italian strongpoints near the Libyan border. Fighting their way westwards toward Tobruk, they suffer heavy losses at Sidi Rezegh and Belhamed.” [nzhistory.govt.net]

"GUNNER S. E. AHIER Gunner S. E[F]. Ahier, who is reported to have died of wounds, is the son of Mrs E. A. Ahier, of Mount Eden, Auckland. Gunner Ahier was a member or the Auckland staff of the Bank of New South Wales when he enlisted, going overseas with the second Echelon. He was educated at the Te Awamutu District High School, where for three years he was captain of the Rugby team and was a popular member of a well-known Waikato family."
