Biographical Notes:

“Corporal Neil McLeod Matheson, reported died of wounds, was the youngest son of Mr and Mrs G. S. Matheson, Tyne street, Roslyn. "Pat," as he was familiarly known, was educated at the Kaikorai School, and for several years was a clerk in the Railway Department at various Otago and Southland stations. Corporal Matheson took a great interest in defence matters, and was an enthusiastic member of the Railway Engineers, in which he held commissioned rank. He went to Samoa with the advance party, and, being invalided back, it was some time before, he was again fit for active service, but eventually he got away with the 25th Reinforcements about nine months ago. Corporal Matheson's father served in the Maori war, and his three remaining brothers are in khaki.” [Otago Daily Times , Issue 17215, 18 January 1918, Page 5]
