Biographical Notes:

"Mcintyre, "Sherry", 1881-1919, Mcintyre, Sherreffs, 1881-1919, Mcintyre, Sherriffs, 1881-1919 World War One serviceman and artist of war sketches. He was born in Aberdeen, but by 1917, when he enlisted for the war, he had been resident in New Zealand for fifteen years and was a hotel porter at Te Puke Hotel. He may be the same person as Sheriffs McIntyre listed as a journalist in Oamaru in 1905; and Sherriffs McIntyre, listed as a press artist in Wellington in 1911. On the ship on his way to the war he drew caricatures including one of the Tofua's Captain Todd, later published in the magazine "Kiwi". During the war he was with the Auckland Regiment involved in actions in France and drew sketches which were later used in a series of Red Triangle postcards published by the YMCA. He was wounded at the Somme in March 1918 (gunshot wound to left leg), but progressed favourably at Hornchurch Hospital. However he was suffering in 1919 from "disordered action of the heart" (DAH). He was discharged in March 1919, and died on 30 December 1919. He is buried at Waikumete Cemetery amongst other servicemen (as Sheriff McIntyre). He is likely to be the same man as Sherreffs McIntyre, listed as a soldier living at the Waitemata Hotel, Auckland Central in 1919."
