Biographical Notes:

The service record originally had the date of death as 19 September 1916 and this was subsequently altered to 18 September 1916. The reasons given in the story submitted by Squadron Leader Lindsay Campbell below would appear to be the most likely ones. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission still uses the original date of the nineteenth and that date appears on the headstone.
