Biographical Notes:

HAMILTON SOLDIER’S DEATH Corporal John O’Leary, of Hamilton, died in the Auckland Hospital last night as the result of injuries received when he was involved in an accident at a railway crossing near the Papakura military camp on Tuesday night. The accident occurred at the level crossing at McLennan’s Road shortly after the truck had left the camp. One soldier, Sergeant A. H. L. Brown, of Mount Albert, was killed instantly, and four others, Corporal O’Leary, Staff-Sergeant W. H. Jones, of Sandringham, Staff-Sergeant G. L. Marten, of Christchurch, and Private J. P. Kelly, of Cambridge, were admitted to hospital. The condition of the last-named was still serious, according to a message from Auckland. Before he entered the Army in July, 1942, Corporal O’Leary was employed at Messrs Reid’s, Limited, Hamilton, for a short time, prior to which he worked at the office of the Hamilton Borough Council. Corporal O'Leary is survived by his wife and one son, aged four years.
