Biographical Notes:

Leonard Cunningham was the pilot under training and John Robinson the instructor on a Harvard trainer flying from RNZAF Wigram. At 1400 hrs they were seen in a spin over Rangiora, recovered but failed to pull out of the resultant dive at low altitude.
