Biographical Notes:

“Mrs Richard Fowler, of Bluff, has received the following communication from Commander E. W. Boothby, H.M.S. Hermoine, Southampton, dated April 20:—"I deeply regret to have to acquaint you of the death of your son Henry Fowler last evening of pneumonia. He died in Haslar Hospital, Gosport, at 10 p.m., whither he was sent on April 16, his illness being of short duration. It Is exceedingly regrettable as he was a promising young man, and the service has been robbed of one who would have performed much good work. He was well liked and very popular with his shipmates, and on behalf of myself and the officers and crew of the ship I beg to tender sincere condolence in the sad loss yon have sustained. The funeral, with naval honours, is taking place on Wednesday, April 25, from the Royal Naval Hospital at Gosport.” The late Mr Fowler joined the motor boat service of the Royal Naval Auxiliary School, when the officers of that arm of the service visited New Zealand some time back for the purpose of enrolling volunteers. He was a mechanical engineer by trade, and was employed by Messrs Metzger and Watson at Bluff. He was a particularly fine type of a young New Zealander, and was exceptionally popular with all with whom he was acquainted. He was an expert in the handling of boats and engines, hence the reason his services were accepted by the Naval authorities, he being one of the few successful volunteers in Southland out of a very large number.” [Southland Times, Issue 17949, 8 June 1917, Page 3]
