Biographical Notes:

"KILLED IN ACTION. LIEUT H. W. DAWSON. Lieut. Harold W. Dawson, of the Royal Flying Squadron, who has been killed in action, was the second son of Mr W. T. Dawson, 10 Warrington Street, St. Albans. He was born in Gore on December 3, 1895, and was educated at the [Christchurch] Normal and St. Albans Schools and [Christchurch] Technical College. Having a passion for engineering, he served his time with the firm of Cooper and Duncan. He enlisted as dispatch rider with the Engineers of the 10th Reinforcement, but left New Zealand with the 11th Reinforcement, he was sent straight to France, was promoted to corporal, and did some arduous work as dispatch rider at the Somme. He went to England in January of this year, and succeeded in gaining his commission on March 4, being one of the three successful students out of 250 in a special examination. After that he was chosen as scout pilot, and underwent training for that position. He was an enthusiastic hockey player, and an active member of the Young Men's Oxford Terrace Baptist Bible Class."
