Biographical Notes:

"LOVE TRIUMPHANT. Husband Forgives Wife who Eloped. Love triumphed in Liverpool Police Court, when Albert Scott forgave his wife, Caroline [Lydia Scott], who eloped with a lodger, William Henry Archer. Both the latter had been arrested, and charged with having stolen two gold rings belonging to the female prisoner's son, and in consequence of the happy turn which events had taken, Scott asked to be allowed to withdraw the charge. Archer was a steward on the Lusitania. On February 28, Mrs. Scott's husband saw him off on the tender under the impression that he would be sailing in the Lusitania. The next morning Mrs. Scott disappeared, and at the beginning of this month she and Archer were arrested in London, where they had been living together. Detective Chief Inspector Holbrook said that the husband of the woman was willing to take her back and forgive her for her wrong-doing; but if permission were given to withdraw the charge it should be on the distinct understanding that the expenses of the prosecution should be paid. Mr. Kinghorn remanded the couple, and said that if the £10 expenses incurred by the police were repaid the prisoners could be discharged. A few minutes later the money was paid." [ Empire News & The Umpire - Sunday 18 April 1909, page 6] William Henry Archer and Caroline Lydia Scott did marry, at the Hartley Wintney Registrary Office, Southampton on 3 December, 1910. However, the marriage was bigamous and invalid.
