Biographical Notes:

Cyril Entwisle joined the Rifle Brigade on the 5th October 1916. By the 17th October he was promoted to Corporal, probably due to his previous Territorial service with the 4th Waikato Mounted Rifles.

Cyril spent the 2nd to the 13th February 1917 on Quarantine Island, Wellington (Soames Island) with an infection. Promoted to Lance Sgt. in February 1917, he was reduced to Private in March. Whether this was due to the manner of his infection is not noted in the record.

He arrived at Sling Camp in Wiltshire on the 12th June 1917 and soon left for France, arriving at Etaples on the 10th July. He was admitted to hospital on the 11th July, again with the infection. His record states that he "broke out" of hospital and on the 20th August was "deprived of 10 days pay, gross" for this misdemeanor.

On the 21st August, he was back in camp attached to the NZ No1 General Base Depot until he joined his battalion, the 4th Battalion, B Company on the 1st September.

On the 13th October, at the Battle of Passchendaele, he receievd a gunshot wound to the abdomen and was treated at the NZ Field Ambulance. Moved via the 44 Casualty Clearing Station at Nine Elms, nr Poperinghe, he was transported to the No 13 General Hospital at Boulogne, France.
