“Three soldiers were killed at Rangitumau, near Masterton, when a universal carrier of which they were occupants rolled down a steep bank into a creek. The victims of the accident were: Bruce Kilmister, aged 21, Masterton. Reginald Thomas McKenzie, aged 20, Clareville, Carterton. Glennister Ferguson, aged 20, Masterton. The accident occurred at 4.30 in the afternoon when a universal carrier became bogged in a creek on farm property and the carrier with three soldiers started down the bank to its rescue. When partway down it was faced with a steep decline, and the driver apparently decided to turn back. In the act of turning, the carrier capsized, and rolled over several times.
