Biographical Notes:

"Cable advice received in Christchurch on Sunday last reported the death of Trooper Leslie Walter Gibbs killed in action on January 9th, at Rafa. The late Trooper Gibbs was the only son of the late Mrs J. Gibbs, of Carlton terrace. Merivale, and was 23 years of age. He was born in Christchurch, and was educated at the Normal School. Trooper Gibbs, who left Christchurch with the 1st Canterbury Mounted Rifles (Main Body), saw service at Gallipoli, where he was wounded. He then returned to Egypt, where he remained until his death. Previous to his enlistment he had been employed by his brother-in-law, Mr A. Lock." [Press, Volume LIII, Issue 15810, 27 January 1917, Page 9]
