Andrew was one of three Davidson brothers to serve in WW1. Rifleman John Davidson, 22nd Reinforcements H Company 3rd NZRB, was badly wounded at Passchendaele and Corporal George Davidson 17th Reinforcements, Otago Infantry Regiment, 8th Southland Company was gassed at Bapume. Andrew the younger of the three, joined the 28th Reinforcements, Otago infantry. He was witness to the Berre Ferres train crash in which some of his fellow soldiers lost their lives or were badly maimed. He was transferred to the NZRB, and was killed in action at the battle of Trescault Spur, in France, aged 23.
