Biographical Notes:

“Fatal injuries were suffered by a young territorial and two other men were injured when two motor cycles were involved in a collision in McKenzie Road. Mangere. about seven o'clock on Saturday night. The victim was:— Cecil Don Ashwin, aged I9, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ashwin, of Kirkbride Road. Mangere. The injured men were:—Mr. George Daniel, who lives at the Maori settlement at Pukaki Park. Mangere and who suffered a fracture of the right thigh and head injuries, condition serious: and Gilbert Noel Matthews, aged 19, motor driver, of Commissariat Road. Penrose, head injuries, condition not serious. In company with Matthews, who was riding on the pillion seat of the motor cycle. Ashwin was going to the city along McKenzie Road when his motor cycle was involved in a collision with another cycle driven by Daniel, which was travelling in the opposite direction. Following the collision, Daniel's machine caught fire. Ashwin's injuries included a fracture of the skull and lacerations to the brain, and injuries to the right foot, thigh and hand. Death was instantaneous.

The condition of Daniel this morning was still serious. Deceased had almost completed his territorial training at the Avondale camp and was on week-end leave.”
