Biographical Notes:

"Mr Axel Alquist, of Canvastown, received last week the sad news of the death of his eldest son, Rifleman Charles Axel Alquist, who was killed in the last big drive in France. “Aki” Alquist was one of the cleverest and most popular boys born and reared in the Pelorus. At school he won a scholarship in the Marlborough High School, which however, he was unable to attend owing to the distance from home and the poor facilities for boarding pupils which at that time prevailed in Blenheim. He was also a crack shot in the Canvastown Defence Rifle Club, a splendid cricketer, a good footballer, and a thoroughly good fellow all round, and his loss is deplored by a host of old schoolmates as well as by his sorrowing parents. Mr and Mrs Alquist have been the recipients of a great many condolatory messages, for which they feel grateful though their loss seems inconsolable. Lawrence Alquist, their second son, who. was at Samoa with the original Expeditionary Force which took those islands and was invalided home, has evidently, been confused with his brother in the columns of your paper. Lawrie has now enlisted again from Wellington where he at present is." [Pelorus Guardian and Miners' Advocate., Volume 29, Issue 52, 6 July 1917, Page 5]
