I live in the hamlet of Ebony in Kent, back in the UK. Recently researching the World War I dead listed on the plaque in our local chapel, I came across Daniel's name. A little bit of research later, I was interested to find that he had emigrated some 9,000 miles to New Zealand in the early 1900's. Why I wondered? Well, agricultural rates were almost at a subsistence levels and he must have heard of this far away part of the Commonwealth. So, up he packed and off he set. Only to rise to the call of Kitchener's army a few years later and to fall in Flanders fields. I have attached a picture of the cottage where he grew up and will soon make a pilgrimage to his grave at Wulverghem-Linendenhoek Road Military Cemetery. If anybody reading this has more information on Daniel, do please get in touch.
