Donald Jessen was one of eleven children, born to William August and Christine (nee Johansen) Jessen in Mauriceville West, New Zealand. His father had emigrated to NZ in 1874 from Denmark, and married Danish-but-NZ-born Christine in 1890. Donald's older brother, John Jessen (27), was killed in action fighting in France, August 1918. Just six months later his parents received word that Donald (23) had died of illness in the UK. It was a tragic loss. Memorial plaques for both sons were erected in the Jessen family plot at the Mauriceville Lutheran Church cemetery.
