Known as Ian, he was born on 24th October 1912, in Christchurch, New Zealand. He was educated at Christchurch Boys' High School and Canterbury University College. He moved to England and joined the RAF. Played rugby union for England in 1939 and married Miriam ROBINSON on 6th October 1939 in Kent. Killed returning from bombing raid on 14th August 1940. Daughter, Tina Johnston born 8th November 1940.
