“LOST ON THE LAURENTIC. ENG. LIEUT. COMMANDER RUTLEDGE. News has been received of the death of G. R. Rutledge, Eng. Lieut.-Commander, H.M.S. Laurentic, and third son of Sergt. Rutledge, late of Lyttelton, and now of Rossall Street, Christchurch. He was educated at the Riverton District High School, Southland, and afterwards served his apprenticeship to the engineering at Messrs Anderson's, Ltd., during which time he spent some three years at Canterbury College, under Professor Scott. He then went to England and joined the White Star Line, in which service he remained until 1914, having just obtained his certificate as chief engineer. At the outbreak of war, he joined, as Eng. Lieut, the Teutonic, which had been commandeered by the Admiralty. He was there until October 19, 1916, when he was transferred to the ill-fated Laurentic, which was sunk by the enemy off the Irish coast on Thursday, January 25, 1917. Deceased was in his 39th year.
