McFARLAND Grenville James Pilot Officer (Pilot) RAF. Service Number 42413. Died 10th May 1940 aged 20. Son of James Andrew and Clarice Karina McFarland of Stoke Nelson, New Zealand. On 10th May 1940, at 22.40 Pilot Officer McFarland was returning to Upwood piloting a Blenheim Bomber L4889 on a solo flight with 17 OTU. As he approached the airfield the engine stalled and the aircraft crashed at Green Dyke. Grenville was a New Zealander and had been Head prefect of Nelson College until 1938.
