My son's middle name is Jesse and my grandfather [G.F Morris] told me about his uncle, Jesse who died in World War 1, and gave me some memorabilia that had come into his possession. I remember being told the story when I was a child; apparently he was shot while out cutting barbed wire to prepare for an assault the next day. The story is that his farm dogs, back home in Owaka, went crazy at approximately the same time that he died. As if they knew across the world that something terrible had happened. When I look at these pictures I realize he had no children to remember him, but perhaps by putting this poem sent to his parents online the words will remain true. Even although I never knew you I mourn your loss and thank you for your bravery. The Empire did not deserve your sacrifice and I hope you have found peace in the Heavenly Kingdom.
