Leonard was the son of Ernest and Jane (nee Addison) Appleton. He was born 19 Sep 1888. He died of dysentery aboard the HMS Aquitania, between Madras and Gibralter, while enroute to the Dardenelles campaign. He was buried at sea. At the time his parents were living at Gibsons Quay, Hokitika, Westland (not Greymouth).
