Niels Andersen was the son of Danish immigrants to New Zealand who fled Denmark after losing the second Schleswig War (1864). Niels' father fought the Germans in that war. Niels was a bushman in the Ngamoko Forest near Norsewood. By all accounts, he was a very hardy man, but a kind man with a good sense of humor. A famous story about Niels is that he once axed off his own finger while cutting a tree, and simply looked at it, made a joking remark and carried on working.
