Owen Miles was my Uncle and my hero when growing up in the 50's and 60's. His death was a real tragedy for the family. especially his mother Alice (nee Long) who lost two brothers (Gallipoli and Ypres) in WW1 and her son in WW2. Another son, Frank was wounded and deafened by gunfire. A sister (my mother) Veronica was away in North Africa and Italy for four years as a nurse. Owen went to Otago Boys High School 1926-1929.. He was a keen rugby player and cricketer.. He went on to Otago University where he gained an MA degree., and a diploma of Education,He went on and became Headmaster of 5 Forks School near Oamaru, and is in the War Memorial of Five Forks. He went to North Africa with the Army Service Corps and was in the 1st Ammunition Company, driving supplies of ammunition and armaments from Cairo to the front line. The front line changed quickly as armies advanced and retreated across the desert, and he was often driving 100's of miles each way, while German aircraft did everything they could to stop supplies getting through. In July 1942, loaded with explosive, his truck took a direct hit from a bomb
