Dear Uncle Clyde We never met, you were at Monte Casino when I was born in January 1944. I have a card received by my parents for Christmas 1943. You wrote a short message to Mavis, Don and Diann + 1, wishing us a Merry Christmas. I am the plus One! I was so excited when I found your record, although Mum had given me your surname name; it was many years ago and all I had was the name Clyde...it was quite a moment when I found Thomas Murray Clyde McConnell on the war records for the battle of Monte Casino. I knew you had been killed, now I know the date of your death and where you have your memorial headstone Auntie Dulcie was a lifetime friend of my parents and I visited her at the Antigua Street flat many times. It is because of this address and that your next of kin was “Dulcie” McConnell that I know I have found you. As an aside the Army named me Jan as I was born in January and it was necessary to add me to the records, Mum and Dad did not change this, only added to it, I am Janice...but I am always called Jan! Recently a group of Veteran Soldiers returned to Monte Casino for the 70th Anniversary of the Battle, there has been a lot written in our papers about this horrific time, this is partly why I wanted to find you and perhaps somehow let you know that you are not forgotten.
