Biographical Notes:

Buried at sea in the vicinity of Pitcairn Island by Rev. Chaplin Skinner.

[On board the Waimana returning to New Zealand in 1919.] "The boxing contest finals are held on deck but turn out to be a poor exhibition. Afterwards, the deck game competitions start to much excitement. Pillow fighting on a horizontal pole fixed four feet above the deck gives me a couple of exciting rounds.

Then on the fourth pillow-fight bout an awful event occurs. Both competitors are knocked down at the same time. One quickly gains the pole while we wait for the second man to get up. Medical officers arrive with towels and start artificial respiration. The man doesn't recover and his life is declared extinct. I am shaken by his life taken so suddenly before my eyes. It is peacetime, but again it is borne out, in the midst of life we are in death. ... So near to home. ...

[11 June 1919]
Out of sight of land, we hold the burial for Private Campbell. His body is sewn up in canvas weighted with stout iron bars, then shrouded with the Union Jack. Members of his platoon form a guard of honour for a very moving service delivered by Father Skinner from Waiuku. They lower the body into the sea on the port side with a final splash."
