While practicing formation flying at 20,000ft, Dickie collided with another aircraft, causing both pilots to bail out. The other pilot, Flg. Off J Mills, survived, but Dickie was found dead in a paddock where he had landed. It is believed that he struck the aircraft whilst jumping out.  [For Your Tomorrow, Errol Martyn, Vol.2, p.122]
